NORFOLK - St. Lawrence County Legislator Sallie A. Brothers wants a third term on the Legislature. The Democrat said Wednesday that too much work lies ahead to quit.

"We are going into some of the most difficult years we've faced in this county, which is why I'm committed to doing everything in my power to get us over this difficult road," Mrs. Brothers said.

The retired teacher and former dairy farmer was elected unopposed in 2002 to replace former Legislator James H. McFaddin. She won a second term in 2006 against Republican Terry E. Premo.

She said her biggest accomplishment on the Legislature was working with Legislator Donald A. Peck, R-Gouverneur, in 2007 to establish a home heating fuel assistance program for low-income residents who did not qualify for other programs.

"I've worked to create a really strong bipartisan approach to the problems in our county," Mrs. Brothers said.

"Within the Democratic majority there are fundamental differences in the outlook of some members. Those differences open the door to opportunities to work across party lines to solve our problems. The issues are too important. It doesn't matter if you're a Democrat or Republican."

Mrs. Brothers was among seven lawmakers who in December unsuccessfully attempted to raise the county's 3 percent sales tax. She said she still believes a tax hike is necessary for the county to cope with rising costs and falling revenues.

"Property owners simply cannot afford to bear the burden of providing services at our current level," she said.

Asked why her constituents should re-elect her, she said, "I think I have something to offer this community and St. Lawrence County. I don't want to serve to further my ego. I want to serve to be a voice for people who very often don't have one."

No challengers have so far surfaced for Mrs. Brothers's District 12 seat, which represents the town of Norfolk, village of Norwood and a portion of the town of Potsdam. County Republican Committee Chairwoman Nancy K. Martin could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
