Over $1,000 in cash and checks were stolen during a robbery Thursday night after a store employee was accosted as he came out of a business carrying the night deposit, according to Ogdensburg City Police.

City police were called to North Country Rent to Own, 1041 Paterson St., to investigate a robbery that occurred outside of the store at approximately 7:15 p.m.

According to Patrolman Scott L. Reed, an employee was coming out of the store carrying a deposit envelope containing approximately $1,050 in cash and checks when he was approached by a white male between 6'3" and 6'5" in the parking lot as he was leaving work.

Ptl. Reed said that the robber, clad in a dark hooded sweatshirt, allegedly pushed the store employee up against the building, snatched the deposit envelope and told the employee, "Don't move."

No weapon was seen by the store employee, who was not injured during the incident, according to the patrolman.

Ptl. Reed said that after the robbery, the employee said the thief reportedly got into a dark-colored Pontiac Grand-Am. The vehicle was last seen traveling west up East South Street.

Ptl. Reed said he did not know how the robber knew that an employee would come out of the business carrying the night deposit shortly after 7 p.m.

"You would have to ask the thief," Ptl. Reed said.

After receiving a report of the robbery, city police sent police cruisers searching the area.

New York State Police and sheriff's deputies joined the search for the vehicle.

City police are continuing to investigate the robbery. Anyone who may have seen anything suspicious or know anything further in regards to the robbery is urged to call the Ogdensburg City Police Department at 393-1555.
