Johnson Collects 5 Hits As Bears Split Opener
FT. MYERS, FL- The SUNY Potsdam womenâs softball team started its 2010 season down in Florida as they played two games of a 10 game trip on Sunday morning.
The Bears won the first game 9-1 over Anna Maria College. Amanda Perry hit her first career homerun in her first at bat on the 1st pitch of the game. She was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Dana Vollmuth (Great River/Islip) was 2-for-4 with a homerun, two runs, and two RBIs. Heather Johnson (Heuvelton) went 2-for-3 with a double, a run, and a RBI. Megan Strough was 1-for-3 at the plate as was Heidi Grebinger who had a double, a run, and a RBI. Allison Breivogel scored two runs. Brittany Pawlowski pitched six innings and gave up three hits, one unearned run, three walks and nine strikeouts.
In the second game, Potsdam fell to Washington College 10-4. Johnson was 3-for-4 with a double. Perry was 2-for-5 with a double and a run. Breivogel was 2-for-5 with a run. Vollmuth and Grebinger were both 2-for-4 at the plate with doubles.
Katie Nawrot went two innings and gave eight runs on nine hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Pawlowski pitched four innings and gave up two runs on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Meghan Patterson (Malone) pitched one inning giving up one hit, one walk, and she had one strikeout.
HOCKEY
BENSENVILLE, ILL. - The No. 15 SUNY Canton men's ice hockey team rebounded from an opening round loss to beat No. 16 Rutgers University 6-5 in overtime in a consolation game of the America Hockey National Tournament at The Edge Ice Arena. The Roos end their season at 20-12 overall.
Adam Fedor scored his third overtime goal of the season and fifth game-winning tally of the year when he knocked in a power play goal with 4:26 left in the first overtime. John Payne and Adam Levy assisted on the goal.
It was Fedor's second goal of the game as the freshman also had an assist and finished the year as the team's leading scorer with 27 goals and 27 assists for 54 points. SUNY Canton, who lost to No. 2 Penn State 7-3 in the opening round on Saturday, was making their first appearance in the national tournament. The Roos built a 4-1 lead after two periods but then watched Rutgers rally and force an extra session with three straight goals, the last coming with 6:32 left in regulation.
Eric Cookand scored Dan Cibelli scored for a 2-0 magin and the Roos stretched their lead to 4-1 following goals from Darren Camp (Canton, ), and Fedor in the second period and then 5-2 after Camp and Jason Adams of Rutgers traded goals to start the third period. For Camp it was his seventh and eighth goals of the year.
Rutgers then pulled off the rally scoring three times, two on the power play, in a five-minute stretch to send the game into overtime.
Jimmy Merrow, who had 51 saves against Penn State, made 28 more against Rutgers and finishes his junior year with a 3.32 goals-against average and a .887 save percentage.
BASEBALL
Pat Considine scored the winning run from first base with one out in the bottom of the seventh to give St. Lawrence University's baseball team a 5-4 win over Haverford College, gaining a split of a Sunday doubleheader played in Florida. Haverford won the first game 6-0, holding the Saints to just one hit. Sean Voss allowed four earned runs and took the loss in game one with Paul Piatelli getting the lone Saint hit.
The Saints were down 4-0 going into the bottom of the sixth in game two, but rallied to tie it and then won it in the bottom of the seventh. Considine was hit by a pitch with one out and Garrett Fitzgerald laid down a bunt which the pitcher threw into right field. Considine went all the way from first to home, just beating the throw from the right fielder with a head first slide around the catcher to score the winning run.
Zach Slater pitched into the sixth with Jason Conde getting the win in relief, allowing two hits. Fitzgerald went one for three, Carter Franz was one for two with a run scored and a run driven in and Matt D'Auteuil was one for two with a run scored.
LACROSSE
CANTON - The St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team, ranked 19th in the national polls, used a six-goal second half to stun No. 8 Haverford by the score of 8-6 in the 2010 season opener at Manhasset High School in Long Island, NY on Saturday afternoon. "It was a tremendous team-win against an outstanding squad," said St. Lawrence head coach Mike Mahoney.
Senior captain John Manning capped the four-goal run nearly four minutes into the final frame to put his team on top 6-4. Though Haverford would cut its deficit to one at 6-5, sophomore Matt Pope and Kyle Jacobsen would deliver clutch goals with nearly six minutes left to put St. Lawrence ahead 8-5.
Senior goalie Andrew Cochran made 11 saves for the Scarlet and Brown and improved to 2-0 in his career, while Joe Banno suffered the loss for Haverford despite making 13 stops.
