MASSENA - Funeral services for George E. MacPherson, 73, of Bloomington, Ind., formerly of Massena, N.Y., will be held Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Emmanuel Congregational Church in Massena.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Phillips Memorial Home Massena.

Mr. MacPherson passed away on July 21, 2010 in the Indiana University Hospital, Indianapolis, Ind.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sylvia; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Leo Sochia of Norfolk, N.Y., Lisa and Rick Hartigan of Massena, and Hope and David Henderson of Bloomington, Ind.; three sisters, Mae Brouse of Massena, N.Y., Joyce Coto of Massena, N.Y., Betsy Frank of Massena, N.Y.; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by three brothers, John, Hugh and Stanley MacPherson; and two sisters, Marion Patterson and Beverly Grinstead.

George graduated from Massena Schools and was employed at the R.J. Rowell and White Dairy in Massena. He married Sylvia Garcia Aug. 1, 1959 at the Emmanuel Congregational Church in Massena.

He later went to work at the General Motors Plant in Massena as a pipe fitter for 18 years until his transfer in 1987 to the GM plant in Bedford, Ind., where he retired in 2005 after a total of 35 years of service to the company. After his retirement he enjoyed traveling to and spending time at their summer residence in Higley Flow, Colton, N.Y.

George was a member of the Scottish Society of Greater Bloomington, The Bloomington Elks Club, American Legion Bloomington, and a former member of the Massena Rescue Squad.

He enjoyed carpentry, landscaping, gardening, holiday decorating and reading. He also volunteered at the Winter Shelter for the Homeless in Bloomington. He adored spending time with his beloved wife, children, family, and friends and will greatly missed.
