NORWOOD - Last August 22th, Teresa and Chris Stone competed in the Norwood Beach Triathlon in the morning and were married later that afternoon.
This year, the couple took a year off from competing to join together and serve as organizers of the event which took place on Saturday at the Norwood Beach Recreation Park on Lake Shore Drive in Norwood.
"I'm more nervous this year making sure all the participants are OK and everything runs smoothly," said Teresa who had competed in the triathlon since 1994.
"Last year, competing and then getting married was a piece of cake. I missed competing today, but Mother Nature co-operated and the turnout (over 100) was very good. We've had a lot of positive comments."
The event consisted of a half-mile open water swim, 15-mile bike ride and 4-mile run with participants completing the entire race as individuals or as part of two or three member teams.
Winning the men's division was professional triathlete and Lisbon native Matt Russell in a time of one hour, four minutes and 39 seconds while leading the women's field was Redwood native Kara Rusch who finished in 1:27:21. The Team leader was Team Potsdam in 1:09:13.
"This race helps me work on my speed with the World Duathlon coming up. It's a good workout," said Russell.
"It's nice to come back here to the area and see family and friends and train on the beautiful back roads here. This was a decent turnout for a local race with good temperatures (low 70's). Everything went great."
All benefits from Saturday's race went to local organizations: The John C. Purvis Scholarship Fund, the St. Lawrence County Health Initiative and the Norwood Recreation Department.
Christiana Purvis competed on Saturday, running for her father, John C. Purvis, who lost his life in a car accident last year. Mr. Purvis was a long-time participant in the Norwood Beach Triathlon and the Scholarship Fund in his name goes to benefit Norwood-Norfolk students.
Rounding out the top 10 in each Division were: Kevin Beatty 1:07:42, Nathan Traynor 1:13:17, Jason Schreer 1:13:34, Kelsey Brady 1:13:36, Chris Inch 1:13:58, James Brady 1:14:51, Ethan Townsend 1:16:35, Jared Longmore 1:17:16 and Peter Gordon 1:18:03 in the Men's Division; Laura Tarbell 1:30:45, Phebe Mott 1:32:06, Sherry Pomerleau 1:33:1, Memory Bouchard 1:34:25, Tara Freeman 1:35:21, Rebecca Weld 1:36:09, Sam Harrison 1:36:16, Margie Harmer 1:36:48 and Eileen Visser 1:38:37 in the Women's Division; and The Vapors 1:19:56, Team Rogers 1:20:52 1:24:23, Team Teen 1:25:20, Wear On Earth 1:25:38 Team Gordon 1:28:59, PDT 1:31:33, Coates-Johnson 1:32:58, RGR 1:33:39 and Team RichBridge 1:33:44 in the Team Division.
