White-tailed Deer Seminar

With the arrival of September, sportsmen and women turn their attention to the approaching deer season, and there is no better way to prepare for this fall's hunts than to attend the Charles Alsheimer seminar entitled 'Strategies for Whitetails.î Whether the hunter is a seasoned veteran or a newcomer to the sport, Alsheimer's presentation is guaranteed to both inspire and educate.

The seminar is sponsored by Ogdensburg Firefighters Local 1799 and will take place on Thursday, September 9 at the Odd Fellows Community Hall on State Route 37, Ogdensburg. Tickets ($10 for adults and $7 for youths 13 and under) are available at the Ogdensburg Fire Station, and the seminar is slated for 6 p.m. For more information, call the department at 393-5120.

New License Year

The new license year begins on October 1, but a number of hunting seasons open in September so those individuals who plan on hunting the September seasons are reminded that they must possess the current year's license (2009-10) and valid tags. Hunters are advised to check the new Regulations Guide for season dates and regulations, but the September hunting opportunities include squirrels, Canada geese, ruffed grouse, black bear, deer (bowhunting), youth pheasant hunt, and youth waterfowl hunt.

Bowhunter Education Course

A Bowhunter Education Course is slated for Saturday, September 25 at 714 Chub Lake Road in Gouverneur. Course hours run from 8 a.m. until finished. Don Davenport is the instructor, and participants must pre-register by calling 785-2533.

Venison Donation Coalition

The Venison Donation Coalition is celebrating its 10th year of sportsmen helping the needy. To date, over 750,000 pounds of venison have been donated to three million folks. Each year, approximately $10,000 is donated at license-issuing outlets, and the coalition is hoping to increase that dollar amount which helps pay for the venison processing. When purchasing your license this year, consider telling the clerk that you would like to make your donation ($1 or more) to the Venison Donation Coalition.
