Maxine L. Hay
Gouverneur - Maxine Leona (Putman) Hay, age 91, formerly of Gouverneur, New York, died August 27, 2010, at the St. Regis Nursing Home, Massena, New York, where she had been a resident since March of 2004.
A funeral service will held Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at 11 am, at the First Presbyterian Church, Gouverneur, New York, with Mrs. Hay's niece, The Reverend Judy Lee Hay, officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur. Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur, on Tuesday, August 31, 2010, from 6-9 pm.
Mrs. Hay is survived by a son and daughter, Scott G. Hay (and his wife Wendy), of Manlius, New York and Christine H. Gamble (and her husband John), of Potsdam, New York; 3 grandchildren, Jennifer L. Hay and Julie A. Weaver, both of Gouverneur, and Hilary M. Gamble of Syracuse; 3 great grandchildren, Noah Macaulay, Madelynne Hay-Spano and Lola Weaver, two sisters Eleanor Henderson of Philadelphia, New York, and Doris Whitmore of Watertown, New York, two sisters-in-law, Doris Markwick of Gouverneur and Dorothy Putman of Florida and loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Gordon S. Hay, two brothers, Ralph Putman and Donald Putman and a sister, Zelda McKeever.
Maxine was born February 21, 1919, in Mexico, New York, to Leon and Leone Putman. Mrs. Hay graduated from Antwerp High School in 1937 and in May of 1943, enlisted in the US NAVY W.A.V.E.S. (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Services). She served as Baker 2nd Class in Washington, D.C., for two years during World War II and received an Honorable Discharge in November of 1945. In July of 1948, she and Gordon S. Hay were married, and the couple resided in Gouverneur, New York, where Mrs. Hay owned and operated Hay's Tourist Home. Mr. Hay, a retired car salesman and World War II veteran, died January 24, 1995.
Mrs. Hay was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Gouverneur, the EJ Noble Hospital Womenâs Auxiliary, the Garden Club, Rebeccaâs Society, and the local TOPS Club. For several years, Mrs. Hay served as an election inspector. She enjoyed baking, golfing, bowling, gardening, and above all, spending time with family and friends.
