As deer hunting season approaches, an acclaimed outdoor writer and photographer will be in Ogdensburg to give tips on helping hunters bag their trophy buck this year.

Charles J. Alsheimer from Avoca, Steuben County, will be providing a two-plus hour seminar titled "Strategies for Whitetails" on Sept. 9, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Ogdensburg Oddfellows Hall, corner of state Highway 37 and Linden Street Road. Doors will open at 4 p.m.

Mr. Alsheimer is a long-time field editor for "Deer and Deer Hunting" magazine and his articles and photographs appear in publications such as "Outdoor Life" and "Whitetail News." He is also the author of "Strategies for Whitetails," "Whitetail - Rites of Autumn," "Quality Deer Management - The Basics and Beyond," "Hunting Whitetails by the Moon," "Whitetail - Behavior Through the Seasons" and "Whitetail - The Ultimate Challenge."

His seminar will include strategies for hunting the pre-rut, the rut and post-rut. The rut is the breeding season for whitetails and is a time when bucks, especially those with trophy racks, are most active and therefore assessable to hunters.

"It's going to be how I hunt whitetails," said Mr. Alsheimer.

Mr. Alsheimer has been chasing whitetails for 58 years, ever since he started tagging along with his father at the age of five. Deer hunting became a passion for him and he's turned it into a successful career as a writer and photographer.

"I'm very passionate about it and I've been able to do it across North America," said Mr. Alsheimer.

The seminar will also include a photo presentation.

The seminar is being hosted by Ogdensburg Firefighters Local 1799. All proceeds from the seminar will go to its fundraising account that is used for charitable contributions, according to Ronald D. Bouchard, union secretary/treasurer.

Mr. Bouchard said that Mr. Alsheimer held a seminar in the early 1990s and it was a huge success. He hopes that area residents will take advantage of Mr. Alsheimer's seminar.

"He has a pretty large following. It was a hit back in the early 1990s and we think it will be popular for hunters again," said Mr. Bouchard.

Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $7 for children 13 and under. They can be purchased in advance at the Ogdensburg Fire Department, 718 Ford St., or at the door the night of the seminar.

Mr. Bouchard said that union is also holding a drawing for $5 with the prize being a Browning A-Bolt .270 caliber rifle or $500 cash. The winner will be announced the night of the seminar. There will also be door prizes that include a pheasant hunt at Basswood Lodge and a $200 gift certificate towards taxidermy service from Larry's Taxidermy.

He added that the Oddfellows have been very supportive of the seminar.

"The Oddfellows have donated the use of their hall and will offer concessions prior to and during the seminar. Larry Vielhauer will be on hand to score racks for those interested," stated Mr. Bouchard.
