Madrid-Waddington Booters Feature Strong Leadership Corps For 2010
MADRID - Despite losing eight quality seniors, Madrid-Waddington Coach Gary Tischler, is extremely excited about his 25th season. A season which begins with a league game at Colton-Pierrepont on Friday which will also serve as a first round game in Potsdam Central's John Jeffers Memorial Tournament which concludes on Saturday.
The postseason will see the M-W Boys and Girls teams compete for Class C honors with Norwood-Norfolk, Brushton-Moira , St. Lawrence Central (Girls only) and Tupper Lake (Girls only).
"We had a good preseason camp. We had a good round-robin scrimmage last week and I saw a lot of excellent things from it," said Tischler who must replace MVP goalie Jordan Kendall, center halfback Jacob Fisher, fullback Justin Putney, fullback Dan Sladewski, fullback Connor Loomis, fullback John Boula, striker Gavin Acres, halfback B.J. Bernard, and halfback James Brady.
Fisher and Bernard were the top two scorers on the Jackets last season but six returners also produced goals.
Zach Marcellus (Jr. Forward), Tyler Jaquith (Sr. Forward), Kody Sharlow (Sr. Halfback), Brandon Perrine (Sr. Halfback), Will O'Bryan (Sr. Halfback), and Brom Steinberg (Sr. Halfback) all contributed to the scoring last year.
"Kody and Tyler are two solid forwards and Will, Brandon and Quinn Shoen are tough in the middle. Alex Brock moves into the goalie position and shows excellent promise and Pat Sharlow is the anchor of our defense," said Tischler.
Shoen is a lenghthy senior fullback-midfielder while Jason Jock (Sr. Halfback) also returns.
"Our program overall is very strong with 43 players at the JV-Varsity level. Having a JV program when most schools are cutting back shows that our school board and administration are looking out for our students. Also our modified program and our youth program has been vital in keeping this program strong for years to come," Tischler added.
Other members of the team include: Zach Flanagan (Jr. halfback), Jarren Harbour (Jr. halfback), Ken Johnson (Jr. center-halfback), Tom Mayette (Jr. forward), Colin O'Bryan (Soph. midfielder), Justin Pierce (Sr. halfback), Josh Tiernan (Jr. halfback), Adam Villnave (Jr. halfback), and Brandon Wright (Jr. midfielder).
SENIORS ANCHOR M-W GIRLS
The Madrid-Waddington Girls Soccer team will be looking to build around four seniors. "We lost some pretty solid players but we have a good core back," said M-W Coach Matt Daley who must replace Emily Pike, Megan McGee, Alex Martin, Chelsea Ashley, Megan Barney. Kelsey Dashnaw, Emily Hargrave, and Alex Gausby.
Senior sweeper-forward Jenna Cryderman anchors the returning cast. "Jenna is going to play sweeper this season. Last year, we needed her offensive presence and she'll play up some this season but were looking for her leadership defensively," said Daley of his leading scorer from 2009 with nine goals.
Makenzie Hough (halfback), Shelby MacIntosh (halfback), and Onalie Beckstead (halfback) also return as seniors and MacIntosh along with juniors Brittany Pierce (forward), Meghan Gabri (halfback), and Courtney Ashley (halfback) will be looked up to step up offensively this season as all four players contributed offensively in 2009. Stephanie Carkner is the lone returning player on defense.
Freshman Taylor Lenny (forward) and sophomores Katie Marcellus (line) and Lauren Sharpe (goalie) highlight the newcomers. "Taylor is a very quick player and should be a key threat for us and Lauren is a solid athlete. Overall, our team should be very quick and our skills are solid. But experience is going to be a factor. We're young and the learning curve is steep. With not playing in a preseason tournament, we're going to use first part of the season to gain that experience," said Daley.
Other newcomers include: Sierra Fox, Taylor Marcellus, Abby Lanning, Shelby Gausby, Sara Taber, Julie Sovie, and Elizabeth Ruddy. Senior goalie Alex Martin anchors the returning cast. She'll be joined by fellow returning seniors Shelby MacIntosh (halfback), Onalie Beckstead (halfback)
Madrid-Waddington's 1-0 setback to eventual Class C Co-Champion St. Lawrence Central in last year's sectionals is a building block for this season. "We played a lot of our younger players in that game to get them some experience which has carried over to this year. The key is commitment and most of these girls played summer soccer," said Daley.
Emily Hargrave and Jenna Cryderman, who were very active in the scoring department last season, must again step up as Shaina MacIntosh, Mouthorp and Sharpe combined for 15 goals.Other returning players include Chelsea Ashley (Sr. FB), Megan Barney (Sr. FB), Kelsey Dashnaw (Sr. FB), Emily Hargrave (Sr. Midfielder), Makenzie Hough (Jr. HB), Shelby MacIntosh (Jr. HB), Alex Martin (Jr. Goalie), Megan McGee (Sr. HB), and Emily Pike (Sr. FB).
Newcomers include Brittany Pierce (Soph. FW.), Stephanie Carkner (Soph. FB), Megan Gabri (Soph. HB), Courtney Ashley (Soph. FW), Alex Gausby (Sr. FW), Onalie Beckstead (Jr. HB), and Alaina Loomis (Jr HB).
