Whitcombe Honored As Morrisville Athlete Of Week
MORRISVILLE - The Morrisville State College Athletic Department has named Nicole Wright (Dryden) and Erik Whitcombe (Ogdensburg) the Mustangs Athletes of the Week for the week ending Monday.
Whitcombe, freshman midfielder, led the men's soccer team to a 1-1 week, netting his first collegiate hat trick in the 4-3 come from behind victory over Green Mountain College.
Whitcombe is a 2010 graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy and is majoring in criminal justice at Morrisville State. He is the son of Carol and Bob Whitcombe of Ogdensburg.
On Monday Whitcombe used a thru ball set up the second of two goals by Stanley Pierre Louis as the 2-1 Mustangs nipped Hilbert 2-1.
Wright, a senior middle hitter for the women's volleyball team, led Morrisville State to a 2-2 week, as the Mustangs opened their 2010 season campaign at the D'Youville College Tournament. In four games for the Mustangs, Wright tallied 35 kills, three service aces and had 30 defensive digs, earning her all-Tournament team honors.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Potsdam 3 - Wells 0: Heuvelton's Heather Johnson scored her second goal of the year and Courtney Poirier of Brushton scored and set up a Jess Mehn goal as the unscored upon Bears climbed to 3-0. Potsdam goalkeepers Caitlin Titus and Kim Callahan each made one save in the shutout.
Plattsburgh 2 - SLU 1: Kristie Pageau scored her second goal of the season 13:17 into the second half to give SUNY Plattsburgh a 2-0 lead. The Saints, now 2-1, scored with 8:05 to play in regulation whensophomore Stephanie Sayward scored her third of the year.
MEN'S GOLF
The SUNY Potsdam Men's Golf team finished first Tuesday afternoon at the three-team Bears Fall Invitational at the par-72 Potsdam Country Club. The Bears, who shot a 306 as a team, were led by juniors Shane Laurie (Canton) and Benton Sullivan (Massena), who finished 1-2 individually in the tournament with rounds of 70 and 75.
Clarkson finished second with a score of 329 led by Rob Wood's 77. Oswego took third with a total of 331 strokes led by Rick Algie's 79.
