POTSDAM — SUNY Potsdam senior Rosie Shrout was named a recipient of the State University of New York Athletic Conference Award of Valor, the conference announced at its annual spring awards banquet Monday.

Shrout, a captain on the Bears’ swimming and diving team, underwent a procedure July 22 to extract bone marrow to donate to an 11-year-old girl with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She found out she was a match for the child after having her DNA collected at the Be The Match Registry drive held on campus in October 2009.

Shrout, a native of Rochester, said several of her current and former teammates, were involved in the on-campus drive through their involvement with the Pre-Health Club.

“Rosie is not your average person,” Potsdam swimming coach Ken McLaughlin said. “This wasn’t a case of her doing just one thing ... this goes hand-in-hand with everything else she’s doing.”

The Award of Valor, which began in 2002-03, is defined as honoring those who overcome obstacles and serve as inspiration to others. Shrout is the first Potsdam athlete to earn the honor.
