It's hard to think about, but summer in NNY will come to an unofficial end in one month, on Labor Day weekend, and it's astonishing how well the weather usually cooperates with this deadline.
I haven't brought out my winter wardrobe yet (I cringe at the mere thought of all those long-sleeved shirts), but I've begun to pull some sweatshirts and even our light fall jackets toward the fronts of our closets for quick access beginning that second or third week in September (please God, let this lovely summer weather hold out until then).
Living through the change from summer to fall in NNY is much (to me) like having a rug yanked from under you – a fragrant, warm and soft rug called your lawn.
My advice is that you shouldn't waste ONE SINGLE MOMENT worrying about summer 2011 coming to a close. Worry about that on October 1 when you are so tired from doing every outdoor activity you possibly can, you happily hole up with your cinnamon and your apples to start thinking about what you'll dress up as for Halloween.
August is filled with fun end-of-the-summer activities in this area and within reasonable driving distance. Below is a listing of just a few. If you know of another one you'd like to promote in your area, please leave a comment or send me an e-mail through my “Contact Me” page.
My friend, “Bee,” an Army wife who was her company's FRG leader until her husband was promoted to a different unit, contributed a lot of great ideas to this list.
Bee is going to continue helping me out with a Kids Calendar of Events, so you can look forward to that this fall, winter and spring when activities become few and far between. She is some type of event/activity wizard genius. I have always been amazed at her ability to know exactly what is happening within driving distance several weeks in advance and how you can make each outing fun for your kids. Thanks so much for helping me out Bee!
