A group of Glenn Beck-inspired conservatives will hold a rally on Watertown's Public Square Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. to support Israel.
NNY912, a group that really doesn't like to be called tea party activists because, you know, they're more educational than activist, is putting on the rally. It comes about two weeks after the north country's congressman, Rep. Bill Owens, visited Israel. Mr. Owens, D-Plattsburgh, favors a two-state solution with 1967 borders and agreed-upon land swaps to solve the really-hard-to-sum-up conflict.
That's the position of President Barack Obama and presidents before him. But Mr. Obama has faced heat from some quarters — cf. NY-9 — that do not view him as sufficiently pro-Israel. (Mr. Owens sounded slightly more supportive of Israel's position than U.S. foreign policy and the position of the international community.)
