HEUVELTON - Featuring a host of activities from carnival games, musical performances, to the famous parade down Main Street, the "Luck of the Irish" Labor Day weekend celebration next weekend offers something for the whole family to enjoy. Admission for the weekend's festivities is free.
The festival, which will feature about 50 units in Saturday's parade at 1 p.m., gives the community a chance to celebrate the village's Irish heritage, organizer Shirley Todd said.
By tradition, kicking off festivities will be a four-mile run/walk Saturday morning at 8 a.m., with registration at 7:30. The $10 entree fee includes a T-shirt, and trophies will be awarded to the top male and female, as well as medals for age group winners.
Highlights on Saturday will include a fishing derby and canoe race for children on the Osegatchie River, a cake walk, contests for nail-pounding and free-throw shooting, and Dr. Jack Zeh's pet contest, in which pet animals will be judged in a number of categories. A baby contest, which includes awards for the chubbiest cheeks, nicest smile and Irish outfit, will also be featured.
Making their first appearance at the festival, the McNamara twins from Madrid-will also perform, making animal-shaped balloons for children and performing card tricks.
About a mile long, Sunday's parade will start at the Old Dekalb junction intersecting Route 812 and end near the school on Main Street. Awards will be given away to the top floats before the parade, including a new award in memory of Charles and Dorothy Fox from Heuvelton.
Following the parade, will be musical performances during the evening from the Accoustic Brothers of Madrid, who'll play hits from the 1950s and 60s, and the band Starlights with WD-40. The evening will close with a 25-minute firework presentation planned for 8:30 p.m.
Food and craft items will be on sale throughout the weekend, as well as "Luck of the Irish" T-shirts at $7 for children and $8 for adults.
To raise money for the festival, buttons will be sold for $1 apiece during the weekend for a chance to win prizes of $100, $50 and $25. Winning numbers will be announced on Sept. 9. A raffle will also be held, with tickets on sale at seven for $5, five for $3, three for $2, or $1 each. First and second prizes will win a $100 gift card to Sunco Gas Station, while third prize is a $50 gift card to Price Chopper grocery store.
Volunteers are still needed to set up for the festival, Mrs. Todd said, noting that more than 100 people participated last year. Those interested in volunteering or registering a float may call her at 393-5684 or Gail Kerr at 535-7202.
