SLU's football team opened defense of its Liberty League championship Saturday with a 20-10 victory over the Merchant Marine Academy.
The Saints scored 20 points in the first 18 minutes, 38 seconds of the game, then held off the Mariners to gain the victory.
Ethan Sutton, who scored two long touchdowns against Merchant Marine last year, caught three more touchdown passes for the Saints Saturday and finished with five receptions for 107 yards.
SLU quarterback Nik Busharis completed 13 of 20 passes for 176 yards and running back Marcus Washington gained 161 yards on 31 carries. Trevor Saunders led SLU's defense with 11 tackles.
