An update on my running series about Republican Matt Doheny's political donations.
Today was the deadline for 32-day pre-general election reports for the Nov. 8 election.
In that span, Mr. Doheny, a businessman running for Congress in the north country, gave $250 to Dave White, the Republican candidate for mayor in Oswego; $1,500 to the Onondaga County Republican Committee; $85 to the Essex County Republican Committee; and $500 to Ogdensburg Mayor Bill Nelson (Mr. Nelson, a Republican, is facing independent challenger Jack McGrath. If you're a reader of this blog, you'll know all about that race).
Of those, the most interesting donation was the $1,500 donation to the Onondaga Republicans.
Why? Because the 23rd Congressional District does not currently reach into Onondaga County. But with redistricting on the horizon, it just might. That could put Mr. Doheny and Republican Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle in the same district, and hence a primary battle. Mr. Doheny has declined to say whether he'd challenge the incumbent in a primary, but this $1,500 donation, and a visit to Onondaga County Republican fundraisers and other soirees should be pretty instructive if you're not afraid to make a you-know-what out of u and me.
But, of course, maybe it's more innocuous than that. Onondaga County could get rolled into Mr. Doheny's district without including Onondaga Hill, Ms. Buerkle's home turf. The dangers of assuming, and all.
