As expected, the Watertown Daily Times had geography in mind when endorsing judge candidates in the Fifth Judicial District.

The state Supreme Court district covers Onondaga, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Oneida and Oswego counties, and a gentleman's agreement has kept residents of each county sitting on the bench. This year, though, three Onondaga County residents are running for seats, even though no traditional Onondaga County seat is open. Four seats — spanning Jefferson, Lewis, Herkimer and Oneida — are open.

The Times endorsed judge candidates from Jefferson, Lewis, Herkimer and Oneida counties.

They are: James P. McClusky, Charles C. Merrell, Prescott E. Klosner and Erin P. Gall.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse ignored geography with its own endorsements.
