While the results of the city's mayoral election hang in the balance, Ogdensburg voters elected three new councilors Tuesday

In the City Council race, Republicans William D. Hosmer and Wayne L. Ashley and Democrat Jennifer Stevenson each won seats in the chamber.

"I will work for the taxpayers and I won't let them down," said Mr. Ashley, who was the top vote-getter with 1,873 votes. "The first order of business is to put this Knox Street issue aside, and we need new leadership in the city manager's office."

Mr. Ashley referred to the ongoing controversy surrounding city-owned property at 819 Knox Street, which has become the subject of a prolonged City Council investigation and debate.

"I am pleased and humbled at the support I received," said Mr. Hosmer, who received 1,852 votes. "Now that I've been elected, the real work begins. We need to develop that waterfront, that will be my primary objective."

Ms. Stevenson said she did not know what her first order of business would be on the council because there are still two months before she takes office, but promised to carry her campaign issues into office with her.

"I will continue my endeavor to keep government open and to be a better communicator," she said. "I am very honored to be elected by the citizens of Ogdensburg."

Ms. Stevenson had 1,183 votes. Her closest challenger, Republican James A. Amo, received 1,021.

Jim L. McCoy, Democrat, finished in last place . He had 464 votes and was unavailable for comment. Mr. Amo remained positive in defeat.

"I would like to congratulate Wayne Ashley and Bill Hosmer," he said. "I think they'll both do a great job and they're both great guys."

Nicholas B. Friot, who garnered 478 votes, did not rule out running again in the future.

"I enjoyed the entire process," said Mr. Friot. "I want to thank all the other candidates for running a clean and up-front campaign."
