Your taxes probably went down.
A Quinnipiac University poll concludes that the majority of people either didn't know whether their income taxes went up or down, or thought they went up. A total of 35 percent of respondents said their taxes went up, but unless Quinnipiac focused its effort solely on Paddock Street and Westchester County, there are some misinformed folks out there.
So, one more time for posterity: Unless you make more than $1 million a year, your taxes went down or stayed the same.
Overall, we in the media call it a tax hike because the new income tax code raises more revenue than it would have if the Senate, Assembly and Governor had not acted. But for most New Yorkers, this is a tax cut of about $300 to $400 a year.
Also in the poll: Gov. Andrew Cuomo's popularity remains sky-high, despite 47 percent of people believing he broke his promise not to raise taxes and 42 percent of people believing he broke his promise to get rid of the "three men in a room" negotiating tactics. (Those tactics, by the way, are probably part of the reason why many people aren't well informed about the tax deal.)
Voters approve of Mr. Cuomo 68 percent to 17 percent. And the honeymoon goes on.
