Former Potsdam player Deane to be inducted

POTSDAM — Former SUNY Potsdam All-American Mike Deane has been selected for induction into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame, the college and the Basketball Coaches Association of New York announced Wednesday.
Deane, a 1974 Potsdam graduate, is the team’s career assist leader with 805 and is sixth all-time in scoring with 1,447 points in 80 games. His 18.1 points-per-game average over three seasons is the highest in program history. Deane was the first of 13 Potsdam All-Americans and inducted into the Bears Hall of Fame in 1984.
A native of Stony Point, Deane went on to work as a head basketball coach at SUNY Oswego, Siena, Marquette, Lamar and Wagner. He amassed a 437-332 won-loss mark as a coach over 26 seasons through 2010. He led three different teams to the NCAA Tournament, appearing in the NCAAs four times total.
Deane last coached at Wagner. He was fired in 2010 after seven years with the team.
Deane will be inducted with nine other members on March 18. The ceremony is scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. at the Glens Falls Civic Center during the Federation basketball state tournament.
