Rep. Bill Owens, D-Plattsburgh, raised about $214,000 in the fourth quarter of 2011, leaving him with about $554,000 on hand in his effort to fend off a Republican challenge.
Of that money, about $80,000 came from individuals and $134,250 came from political action committees.
Mr. Doheny, relying on his friends and associates in the world of business, outraised Mr. Owens in the third quarter. Mr. Owens still has the financial advantage with a head start, but if Mr. Doheny starts dipping into his own funds, Mr. Owens will have a tough time staying ahead. Mr. Doheny has outspent Mr. Owens in the race before, when he came up short in 2010.
