Dr. Anita L. Corey, 68, Chazy Lake
Chazy Lake Dr. Anita L. Corey, 68, of Chazy Lake, died Saturday, January 28, 2012, of pulmonary fibrosis. She was born February 19, 1943, in Holyoke, Massachusetts. She is the daughter of the late Howard and Marjorie (Stone) Corey of Dannemora, NY.
Dr. Corey grew up in Dannemora and graduated from Dannemora High School in 1960. She graduated from the State University of New York, Plattsburgh in 1964 with a degree in elementary education. In addition, she received her Master of Science degree in Education and Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Leadership from SUNY Plattsburgh. She taught first grade at Sherman School in Ogdensburg, NY from 1964-1967 and third grade at Momot Elementary School in Plattsburgh, 1967-1968. From 1968-1971 she was a reading teacher at Beekmantown Central School. Dr. Corey was a doctoral student at Syracuse University from 1971-1974 receiving her Ph.D. in Reading Education in 1974.
From 1974 until her retirement in December 2003, she was a member of the College of Education and Human Development faculty at Radford University in Radford, Virginia. In 1984, she was promoted to Full Professor. During her tenure at Radford University, she was Director of the Reading Clinic and was Program Coordinator for Reading Education. She received the Outstanding Teaching Award at commencement in 2001.
She was a member of the International Reading Association, Virginia State Reading Association, and the New River Valley Reading Association. At her retirement, the New River Valley Reading Association established the Anita Corey Scholarship for Advanced Study in Reading, a scholarship awarded yearly to a graduate student pursuing a Masters Degree in Literacy.
Anita loved the Adirondack Mountains and upon her retirement she moved back to Chazy Lake, where she had spent summers. Dr. Corey is survived by her sister, Marion C. Jackie Denicore of Morgan Hill, California, seven nieces and nephews and ten great-nieces and nephews. Her very special neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Fulton Sheehan, Jr. and their sons Jim and Matthew, Mrs. Shirley Topping and William C. Robarge also survive her.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at the Dannemora United Methodist Church with funeral services to follow at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow in the church hall.
