Doheny's been preparing for redistricting

Matt Doheny is nothing if not prepared.
For the Republican candidate for Congress, the Boy Scouts-esque approach includes campaigning in a broad array of places that aren't even yet in the district.
When I talked to him yesterday about redistricting, Mr. Doheny acknowledged that he's employed a wide approach to cover all his bases. For example, he recently spoke at a fundraiser for Assemblyman Marc Butler, a Republican of Herkimer County. Herkimer isn't in the district right now.
"That's a perfect example of how, you never know exactly where the lines will shape out," Mr. Doheny said. "The outreach has been broad."
Herkimer County was included in the Senate Republicans' redistricting proposal. Neither the Republican proposal nor the proposal from the Assembly Democrats included Madison County, where Mr. Doheny received a strong letter of recommendation from the Conservative Party chair.
Mr. Doheny's responses about the district proposals in particular included a lot of this phrase: "Who the heck knows?"
Indeed. Rep. Bill Owens, who holds the seat and could face off against Mr. Doheny in the November election, had similar responses. Nobody wants to criticize their own districts.
Mr. Doheny said that a good district for him would keep the north country whole.
"I'm hoping that the Senate, the governor and Assembly can come to an agreement so it doesn't have to go through the court process," Mr. Doheny said.
