Clarkson University will be home to a state-supported wind energy testing lab, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced today.

Wind turbine blades will be tested at the Potsdam engineering school with the help of a $4.2 million grant, he said. The money will also help support a solar-power testing lab in Cortland.

"The initiatives announced today will save businesses, homeowners, and taxpayers money and help ensure that our state remains a leader in clean energy production and environmental protection," Mr. Cuomo said in a news release.

Wind power is a controversial subject in the north country, diving opinion among those who think that it's the wave of the energy future and those who don't want wind turbines clouding the region's scenic vistas.

The governor also announced that students at Clarkson University won the state's "Greening Your Campus" initiative by demonstrating $600,000 worth of energy savings.
