Hounsfield partners with Sackets Harbor for pipe flushing

As work takes shape on the town of Hounsfield’s Water District 5, the town has entered an agreement with the village of Sackets Harbor to receive water to flush pipes for the project.

At the Town Council’s monthly meeting Wednesday, the arrangement was confirmed after the village Board of Trustees agreed to a final contract.

In the agreement, the village will provide up to 20,000 gallons of water per day at a price of $4 per 1,000 gallons, up from the village’s normal price of $2.50 per 1,000 gallons. Town officials will contact the village Department of Public Works before beginning flushing work.

The contract allows village water to be made available July 1.

Though the city of Watertown is under contract as the backup water supplier for the new district, the town approached the village because of its more direct connection to the project at Water District 2. Water use will be measured with a newly installed meter at the connection point between the districts.

The village’s commitment comes despite concerns about whether it has the capacity to provide for the project while it improves its water system.

Village Mayor F. Eric Constance said the village’s limits could be tested in July and August, when water use is higher.

“It’s going to be a close game in those summer months,” he said.

Work continues at the district near Watertown International Airport. Crews have worked the past few days to clear rocks near where pipes will be placed for the project.
