North country unemployment rates in May rose from the same month of 2011, according to the state Department of Labor.

Jefferson County’s rate jumped from 9.1 percent to 9.6 percent, Lewis County’s increased from 9.1 percent to 9.9 percent and St. Lawrence county’s hiked from 10.0 percent to 10.4 percent.

Compared with April 2012, Jefferson County’s rate dropped from 10.0 percent, Lewis County’s dipped from 10.2 percent and St. Lawrence County’s rose from 10.1 percent.

Statewide, St. Lawrence County had the fourth highest jobless rate. Compared with May 2011, the state’s jobless rate rose from 7.8 percent to 8.6 percent. That’s also an increase from the 8.1 percent rate in April 2012.
