An unidentified company is eyeing about eight acres in City Center Industrial Park to build a 50,000-square-foot building.

Members of the Watertown Local Development Corp., also known as the Watertown Trust, discussed the prospect during a board meeting Thursday morning. Donald W. Rutherford, the Trust’s CEO, said later he could not provide many details about the company or the project because it’s early in the process.

“We have a lot of work to do,” Mr. Rutherford said while pointing out the location on a map of the 122-acre industrial park off Bellew Avenue where the building would be constructed behind the Current Applications manufacturing plant.

The building would be constructed at the back of the eight-acre site, with enough room to double its size in the future. Mr. Rutherford could not provide a time frame on when the company would make a decision or start the project if it proceeds with the venture.

“I know he’s anxious to get started and we’re pushing that forward,” he said.

But Mr. Rutherford told Trust members Thursday that getting a railroad spur to the site is crucial. He already is working on that component of the project. A railroad line runs through a portion of the industrial park now.

The company contacted Mr. Rutherford on Wednesday to ask for more information about the project.

The Trust, the city’s economic development engine, also discussed the project during an executive session last month.

Developed about nine years ago, the industrial park now has seven businesses. In addition to Current Applications, they are Roth Industries Inc., United Auto Supply, Blue Mountain Spring Water, Alteri’s Bakery, Renzi Bros. and Frito-Lay.
