Republican Matthew A. Doheny defeated Kellie A. Greene in a primary on Tuesday to take on Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh, in the fall.
In unofficial results, more than half of precincts reporting, Mr. Doheny held a commanding lead, in new and old parts of the county. Mr. Doheny was winning upwards of 70 percent of the vote on the night.
"For the first time since former Congressman John McHugh left to become Secretary of the Army, we have united the Republican, Independence and Conservative lines," Mr. Doheny said in a news release. "Voters here will have a clear choice between two competing visions for America."
The GOP welcomed Mr. Doheny into the race against Mr. Owens, while the Democrats welcomed him with a proverbial two-by-four.
"The voters have selected a well qualified candidate, and the Party looks forward to supporting Matt when he defeats Bill Owens this November," Edward Cox, the chairman of the state GOP, said in a news release.
Josh Schwerin of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the House campaign arm, wasn't so kind.
"Even the millions of dollars Doheny has made helping companies fire their employees won’t be enough to make voters forget his extreme record," Mr. Schwerin said in a news release.
