Ogdensburg police expect today to seek a dangerous dog hearing to determine the fate of a pit bull that killed a cat last week.

Police were notified of the incident on June 27 at 7:23 p.m.

Mary E. Dishaw, of 1529 Greene St,, said her 15-year-old cat, Tigger, was napping under a tree in the back yard along Rosseel Street when a woman was walking her dog south along the street.

“She had the dog on a leash, but she just let it go,” Mrs. Dishaw said Monday. “The dog attacked my cat and killed her.”

The pit bull’s owner, Melissa S. LaRose, of 1513 Ford St., said she was shocked when the dog, a female named Dew, took off after the cat and killed her.

“I’m traumatized,” Miss LaRose said Monday, the dog sitting at her feet. “She has never gone after any animals.”

Miss LaRose was issued summonses by police for dog at large and dog causing damage to personal property. She is due in city court on July 26.

Sgt. Fay B. Jenks said Monday he has two witnesses to interview before the dangerous dogs hearing is pursued. That will likely be done today. He said Miss LaRose offered to have her dog euthanized on Saturday, but never did.

“I just couldn’t do it,” Miss LaRose said, adding that the dog has been in her family for 10 years.

According to state Agriculture and Markets law, a dog is deemed dangerous if it attacks a person or another animal “without justification.” A judge may order permanent confinement or euthanasia as a result of that determination.
