In response to public malcontent, Morristown Mayor Cheryl Shatraw said she is working on fixing the “fox problem.”

Numerous sightings of foxes in the village have residents concerned for their children and pets. Speaking at Tuesday’s village board meeting, stories were recounted of foxes approaching groups of people within several yards. Those in attendances generally agreed there are two foxes living within the village limits, though they are worried that there may be more on the way.

Mayor Shatraw said she has spoken to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to no avail. Asked if the DEC has to hold off until an injury has occurred, Mayor Shatraw said, “That’s part of it.”

For now the village board is asking residents to take care not to leave garbage or pet food so that it is easily accessible to foxes. “These are healthy foxes,” said Mayor Shatraw, asking the community to make sure they are not unwittingly feeding them.
