CANTON — Ever since birth, Andrew A. Brink has had to visualize films with just his imagination, and he hopes to teach others how to use their imagination and listening skills as well.

Mr. Brink, 31, Potsdam, was born without sight and had to rely on his listening skills to imagine visuals. Today, he plans to debut his program “Listening and Imagination” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Farmers Market in Village Park

“I have a huge movie collection,” Mr. Brink said. “Lots of people ask me, how can you enjoy movies when you can’t see them? You envision it.” He added that in the visual age, imagination has become underutilized, and he hopes to engage audience members to use their ears and minds instead of their eyes.

Mr. Brink said he will offer “three major pieces of advice” at the presentation, as well as an example for each. He will plays clips of an audio book, an episode of a ’50s radio drama titled “Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar” and a film he recorded as an audio tape, “Critters.”

Mr. Brink said he chose the film “Critters” because of its obscurity as “a low-budget movie,” adding, “It’s something that your average person off the street has not seen.”

Mr. Brink said he wants people to visualize the film in their minds without having known what the movie actually looks like.

“I intend to answer a lot of questions,” Mr. Brink said, “I’m not really a teacher for this, since I’m at an outdoors farmer market.”

Even though he said he does not see himself as a teacher, he said Thursday, “The ultimate goal is to create a class in it. However, for tomorrow, I’m just going to have a station.”

“I have put on similar programs before when I was a college student,” Mr. Brink said. “I did one in SUNY Potsdam, and I know they liked it.”
