OGDENSBURG — Five locomotives bound for the ArcelorMittal iron-mining railway in eastern Quebec were loaded Wednesday onto the BBC Delaware, a cargo ship, at the Port of Ogdensburg.

The engines are being leased by CIT Rail of Chicago to the Port Cartier, Quebec, mining company in a deal orchestrated by the Vermont Rail System. The Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority arranged to load the 400,000-pound locomotives at the port and transport them downriver, said David W. Wulfson, Vermont Rail’s president.

“We have a long-standing business relationship with CIT at our other operations,” he said. “We were pleased to offer them rail access to the Port of Ogdensburg” over the New York and Ogdensburg Railway to load the train engines on a vessel.

“The OBPA played a key role in the success of this multi-modal project, working closely with our staff at NYOG to bring in and load the locomotives,” he said.
