AVA Phyllis A. Hicks, 77, of State Route 26, passed away on July 22, 2012, at the Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation, Boonville.
Phyllis was born in Croghan, N.Y. on July 4, 1935, a daughter Leonard and Doris Schak Bush. She grew up in Croghan and graduated from Father Leo High School, Croghan in 1952. Upon graduation Phyllis attended Mercy Hospital, Watertown for nursing and then transferred to St. Elizabeths Nursing School, Utica where she received her Registered Nursing Degree. She went to work at Rome City Hospital for 18 months, various nursing homes including Stonehedge Nursing Home in Rome and Sunset Nursing Home in Boonville where she was night supervisor. Phyllis retired from Oneida Health Care where she was employed for over 7 years.
She married Patrick Clare August 1, 1953, he died January 14, 1976. On May 26, 1979 at St. Marys Church, West Leyden she married Charles Hicks.
Phyllis was a member of St Marys Nativity Church, West Leyden. She was a life member of the Point Rock Fish & Game Club where she served as secretary for 15 years. She enjoyed needlework and gardening.
Surviving are her husband Charles (Bud); one son, Micheal Clare, Forestport; three brothers, Ronald, James and Kenneth Bush all of Croghan; three sisters, Sally Bush, Croghan, Cindy Czjakoski, Munnsville and Carolyn Buell, Croghan; stepchildren, Lynn and Jennifer Hicks, Weaverville, N.C., Kevin Hicks, Melbourne, FL. and Melinda Hicks and fiancé Gary Schofield, Clifton Park, N.Y.; step grandchildren, John and Kathleen Tully, Clifton Park, N.Y. She was predeceased by one son Martin Clare, one daughter Maureen Clare, one brother Paul Bush and one sister Rita Bush.
A Mass of Christian burial will be on Wednesday, July 25, at 11a.m. at St. Marys Nativity Church, West Leyden with Reverend Lawrence Marullo officiating. Calling hours at Mills Funeral Home, 301 Post Street, Boonville, will be on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. Interment will be in St. Stephens Cemetery, Croghan. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the N.Y. S. For The Deaf, 401 Turin Street, Rome, NY, 13440.
