Mr. Owens, D-Plattsburgh, is facing Matt Doheny on Nov. 6.
Mr. Doheny is bringing in some national star power of his own with an appearance later this week by House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, for a fundraiser.
Here's something else of note: Watertown used to be the center of gravity of this congressional district. When President Bill Clinton came to stump for Mr. Owens, he did it in Watertown. If the Boehner and Gillibrand examples are any indication of future results, that is going to change.
Mrs. Gillibrand, who used to represent Warren, Washington, Saratoga and part of Essex county when she was in the House of Representatives, faces Republican Wendy Long, a Manhattan attorney, on Nov. 6. Mrs. Gillibrand is heavily favored in that race.
