MORRISTOWN - Morristown’s Gateway Museum is kicking off a new fundraiser this week with the goal of sustaining its operation in a time of slacking donations.

“We aren’t getting [as many] donations this year because money is tight,” said museum Treasurer Sue Wilson.

To counter that, the museum has begun selling bricks at $60 each to fill in a section of the entryway.

Donors may have three lines of 14 characters each engraved on each brick. Once the bricks are laid, the buyers will be memorialized as a part of Morristown’s history.

“We want to have enough bricks to fill in that space in front of the museum,” said Ms. Wilson, who estimates that will take about 50 bricks.

Museum board member and brick campaign chairwoman Clara Warren said the effort is designed to “make money to keep preserving our history.”

The museum houses multiple displays that track the development of Morristown. These include photographs, collections of heirlooms and entire rooms dedicated to the town’s wartime contributions from the War of 1812 right up to the recent conflicts in the Middle East.

Currently the museum is in the process of building a replica of the town circa 1912, complete with a working railroad, and a wildlife display.

However, Ms. Warren said these displays will have to wait until further funding is provided.

Bricks can be purchased at the museum, which is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 3 p.m.
