Mayor Jeff Graham writes today that county legislators shouldn't pass a local law that would allow them to seize property used in misdemeanor drug crimes.
"The "war on drugs" has been responsible for an erosion of civil liberties and seizing property becomes an end unto itself," Mr. Graham writes.
That was in reaction to my story this morning about the county considering doing just that.
That's the interesting wrinkle that I think has gone undercovered in this whole debate about synthetic drugs. Yes, synthetic drugs, like bath salts and incense that are ingested to mimic the effect of narcotics, are a huge problem. But is the solution the same "war on drugs" tactics that some commentators say has failed?
We're not talking about mandatory sentences or going back to the Rockefeller drug laws, of course. But it does hearken back to a "throw the book at them" mentality.
