Former President Bill Clinton's lengthy address to delegates at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C. included a mention of former U.S. Rep. John McHugh, R-Pierrepoint Manor.
Mr. McHugh wasn't mentioned by name, but when Mr. Clinton was talking up President Obama's bipartisan cred, he said the following: "Look at his record. He appointed Republican secretaries of defense, the Army, and transportation."
In 2009, Mr. Obama appointed Mr. McHugh as secretary of the Army. That set off a special election that Rep. Bill Owens, D-Plattsburgh, ended up winning. And the rest is north country political history.
