Howies Bar on New York Avenue is pitching in to help the Ogdensburg City Schools varsity football team pay off a set of new uniforms.
The bar will host a Can-Jam tournament from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sept. 29 to raise money for the team. Can-Jam is a Frisbee-based game that requires two teammates to play. Points are gained by spiking the Frisbee into the opponents can.
We enjoy the sport, said Joe O. Howe of Howies Bar. He said the current fiscal state of the school district inspired him and bar staff to want to help support the team anyway they could.
Weve been very grateful to the community, they have been very gracious, said Matt Tessmer, varsity football coach.
The last time the varsity football team bought new jerseys was 2003. Fundraising efforts held since last fall, including bottle drives and bowling tournaments, have allowed the 28-member team to purchase a brand new set of home and away jerseys from Athmedics, a sporting goods supplier in Rome.
We are still paying for them, said Mr. Tessmer, who said the uniforms arrived earlier this week and that the team is close to reaching its goal of $8,000.
Mr. Howe said he hopes to raise between $700 and $1,000 at Saturdays event.
The tournament is open to the public and costs $30 per Can-Jam team. Teams can register by calling the bar at 393-3669.
In addition to the tournament, there will also be a 50/50 raffle and drink specials offered throughout the day.
The bar is located at 809 New York Ave., Ogdensburg.
