MASSENA - A Massena man was jailed after he stole his mothers Dodge Durango and then crashed into a tree just blocks from his home with the vehicle still in reverse, but stuck in the tree and shrubs on Hubbard Road when police arrived on the scene.
Village police charged Kenneth A. Laughlin, 20, of 64 Perkins Road, Massena, with fourth-degree grand larceny and fourth-degree criminal mischief and ticketed him for reckless driving, driving after dark with no headlights, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a property damage accident at 9:28 p.m. Friday. Police said the truck was heavily damaged and was towed from the scene.
Police said a neighborhood resident ran after Mr. Laughlin after the accident and stayed with him until police arrived to take him into custody at the corner of Barnhart Road and Reed Drive.
Court documents indicated family members told police Mr. Laughlin had been off his medication in recent days and had been acting erratically.
He was arraigned by Acting Massena Village Justice James M. Crandall and sent to the St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, with bail set at $2,000 cash or $4,000 bond.
