Food Bank’s reach includes St. Lawrence County

The services provided for the needy provided by Food Bank of Central New York extend beyond St. Lawrence County.

“We are the main food supplier for 268 emergency food programs in an 11-county service area, including St. Lawrence County,” said Executive Director Thomas Slater. “In effect, they outsource their food needs to us. We acquire the food, warehouse the food, and deliver the food to the programs. This food can be government commodities, donated food or purchased food that we offer at cost.”

Programs that sign up with Food Bank pay a shared maintenance fee for its services, Mr. Slater said.

“We are a member of Feeding America, and the maximum fee level allowed by Feeding America is $.19 per pound for wholesale and donated food for a shared maintenance fee,” he said. “We have charged the same $.14 per pound since 1995. It should be noted that we pursue grants to cover the costs of the food and these shared maintenance fees. Government commodities come to the programs with no fee.”

In fiscal year 2011-12, Mr. Slater said, Food Bank provided to its St. Lawrence County clients 863,504 pounds of food, which became 719,586 meals, with the food valued at $1,433,416.

“This fiscal year we are providing 18 food pantries and three soup kitchens with food grants totaling $94,700 in food lines of credit and $37,525 in operation support and equipment dollars,” Mr. Slater said. “Since 1990 we have provided the programs with shelving, refrigerators, freezers and other equipment with government grants to help with storage and distribution at the program sites.”
