Tresidder presses sales tax

Democratic state Senate candidate Amy Tresidder pressed her opponent on raising St. Lawrence County's sales tax at a news conference in Watertown Wednesday morning, suggesting that partisan politics are at play.
State Sen. Patty Ritchie, R-Heuvelton, whom Mrs. Tresidder will face on Nov. 6, has declined to carry legislation in Albany that would allow St. Lawrence County to raise its local share of the sales tax from 3 percent to 4 percent. Mrs. Tresidder says that she would carry the legislation.
She suggested that Mrs. Ritchie's refusal to carry the legislation has to do with the fact that St. Lawrence County is controlled by Democrats, while Oswego and Jefferson counties, which have higher sales tax rates, are controlled by Republicans.
Mrs. Ritchie has said that her constituents have no appetite for a tax hike. And it's not that she's carried legislation to raise sales tax for Oswego and Jefferson counties. She has carried legislation to keep them at the levels they were before she took office.
An anti-tax hike mood has swept Albany, and it's not clear whether Gov. Andrew Cuomo would sign legislation that would raise St. Lawrence County's sales tax.
But Mrs. Tresidder said that Mrs. Ritchie should at least try.
