Republican Matt Doheny and Rep. Bill Owens, D-Plattsburgh, are the major-party candidates.
Mr. Hassig had originally said he'd leave the country in mid-October to retrieve some camping gear in Saskatchewan, Canada, with his brother. He wasn't expected to return until after the election.
But a debate performance in Queensbury seems to have persuaded Mr. Hassig to stick around.
"I have so greatly enjoyed the Love the Earth Protect the Earth Change Everything Campaign that I want to keep on campaigning right through the last minute of voting on November 6th," Mr. Hassig told the Enterprise.
The Doheny campaign sees Mr. Hassig as a potential spoiler in a tight race. Most votes for Mr. Hassig, they reason, is a vote that Mr. Owens would have otherwise won. The Owens campaign downplays the Hassig Effect.
