The state’s annual Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony will recognize Ogdensburg native Alfred J. Hynes at this year’s event, to be held Tuesday in Albany.

Mr. Hynes lost his life in the line of duty at a structure fire in the McDonald Building on State Street on Oct. 25, 1934. He is the only Ogdensburg firefighter to have lost his life in the line of duty in the department’s history, said his granddaughter, Molly Sargent.

Mr. Hynes’s family has been invited to attend the ceremony in Albany, where they will be presented with an American flag and have his name inscribed on the Honor Wall in the Empire State Plaza.

The Ogdensburg Firefighters Local 1799 union donated $500 to the Hynes family Thursday to cover their travel expenses to Albany.

“My father never knew his father because he was 3 years old when he died,” said Mrs. Sargent.

Mrs. Sargent was presented with the union’s check Thursday at the city fire station.

She thanked the union and Chief Steven Badlam for the work they did to gather the money and get her grandfather recognized.

Mr. Badlam started working on getting Mr. Hynes recognized on the Honor Wall when he did not see his name on it while visiting in 2011.

Mr. Badlam said memorializing people like Mr. Hynes “Is a very important thing for the fire service as a whole.”
