ROCHESTER — Plans are under way to revive the Empire State Games in time for next summer, according to an announcement made Thursday by a private foundation that has taken over organizing the games.

The not-for-profit Empire State Sports Foundation is led by Michael Carey, son of former New York Gov. Hugh Carey, the founder of the Empire Games in 1978. The Games were discontinued in 2010 after state funding was cut in 2009.

“The people of New York want the games back, and we are going to make it happen,” Michael Carey said.

Carey said progress has been made to hold the summer games July 24-28, 2013 in the Rochester area. The winter games, continuing for a 33rd straight year, are scheduled again for Lake Placid, from Feb. 7-10.

The last summer games were held in 2010 in Buffalo after private fundraising was found.
