LAWRENCEVILLE - A barn filled with more than 700 bales of straw on the McEwen Road in the town of Lawrence was destroyed by fire overnight.
Lawrenceville Assistant Fire Chief Richard LaBier said the barn was totally engulfed in flames when firefighters responded to the 1:30 a.m. Sunday call. Mutual aid was provided by North Lawrence, Nicholville, Brasher-Winthrop and Hopkinton-Fort Jackson. Dickinson volunteer firefighers provided standby at the Nicholville station, and Moira responded to the Lawrenceville station.
Mr. LaBier said firefighters were on the scene for approximately 10 hours and then returned to the fire scene for a rekindle at 1:28 p.m. Sunday.
The property is owned by Sanford Stauffer, who runs a large dairy farm operation approximately a mile from the fire scene.
