CANTON — Paving work that was expected to start Monday night as part of the $9.55 million Main Street reconstruction project has been pushed back a few days.

Crews are still preparing the street for its base and binder levels, according to Thomas A. Maroun Jr., state Department of Transportation project manager.

“We’re doing the fine grading. At the very latest, the paving will start by next Monday,” Mr. Maroun said. “We’ll start at the intersection of Riverside Drive.”

Using high-powered lighting, crews from Luck Bros. Inc., Plattsburgh, are scheduled to pave weekdays from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Flaggers will control traffic through downtown.

Roughly 25 diesel light plants will be set up on both sides of Main Street, Mr. Maroun said.

The work will extend from the intersection of Riverside Drive to Park Place and is expected to be finished by Oct. 19, DOT spokesman Michael R. Flick said.

The top pavement level will be installed in the spring.

The evening work will not interrupt the daytime work from continuing.

“There will be a different night crew coming in,” Mr. Maroun said.

Granite curbing was installed in September. That work included creating new crosswalks with bump-outs that are supposed to make it safer for pedestrians to cross the heavily traveled Main Street.

The majority of underground work is finished, including the installation of new storm drains, water and sewer lines.

The next step is to replace the stairwells and entryways at several businesses. New sidewalks and then lighting will follow.

“The work will proceed as quickly as possible, but you have to bear in mind that concrete work is often labor intensive in terms of prep and the concrete has to cure before moving forward with subsequent work,” Mr. Flick said.

Ornamental lighting has been purchased that’s similar to the vintage light posts that were removed. The new lighting is expected to be installed in time to decorate with the traditional holiday wreaths.

The tree planting will be done in the spring, Mr. Flick said.
