Officials at the New York State Zoo at Thompson Park reported the death of one its river otters, Lola.
The otter, known to staff members as Odessa, died Saturday.
According to a released statement from the zoo, Lola had been with a veterinarian for several months in an attempt to counteract a lingering infection and had reportedly shown signs of improvement prior to her death.
A necropsy done at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine revealed the cause of death may have been sepsis.
Lola had been at the zoo since 2009, when she was brought in from South Carolina, where she had been hand-raised by wildlife rehabilitators after being orphaned.
