HEUVELTON – Heuvelton Central School will be honoring the late Stephanie Putney, former coach, athletic director and teacher, by naming one of its athletic fields in her honor and adding her name to one of the schools new scoreboards.
Mrs. Putney died July 3, 2010, after a long battle with cancer.
The dedication will take place in a ceremony scheduled for Oct. 19 at 3:30 p.m. at the school. The field will be named Putney Field.
Ms. Putney began her career at Heuvelton in 1975 and served for 35 years as a physical education teacher.
In that time she also served as the schools athletic director and, in 2005, was named the state athletic director of the year by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.
The school wanted to honor her because of all her accomplishments that she had at Heuvelton, said Superintendent Susan E. Todd.
Stephanie Putney was an advocate for all athletes but in particular she helped to instill confidence and overcome gender barriers for future generations of young women and was known as a pioneer in womens athletics, said Ms. Todd in an email message.
The school is in the process of installing new score boards on its athletic fields. Ms. Todd says she hopes to have them all up and connected to electrical power before Fridays ceremony.
