COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A late rally fell just a bit short as the Clarkson University men’s hockey team opened the season with a 5-4 loss to Colorado College in a nonconference game at the World Arena Friday night.

Clarkson fell behind 5-1 but scored three goals in the final 16 minutes, 8 seconds of the game to make things anxious for the Tigers, who improved to 10-0-3 lifetime against Clarkson.

Junior captain Ben Sexton cut the lead to one goal after stealing the puck and scoring with 2:34 left in the game.

Jarrett Burton took advantage of a turnover and scored an unassisted goal at 1:11 to tie the game 1-1 for Clarkson.

Shorthanded goals from Jeff Collett at 3:28 and Rylan Schwartz at 5:49 in the second period gave Colorado a 3-1 lead.

Charlie Taft and Andrew Skalbeck then scored for Colorado’s 5-1 lead. Freshman Pat Megannety started Clarkson’s comeback with a goal at 3:52 of the third period.

Another freshman, Christian Powers, scored at 10:50 to make it 5-3.
