A Polish citizen found to have illegally entered the country following a traffic stop in St. Lawrence County was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court, Albany, to six months in custody and will be deported.

Bozena Lewandowicz, age not available, pleaded guilty Aug. 21 to a federal indictment charging her with being in the United States after having been deported.

According to court documents, she was a passenger July 7 in a van bearing Illinois license plates that was stopped by U.S. Border Patrol agents on Route 37 in Hammond after the vehicle crossed the center line of the highway and slowed to about 40 mph in a 55 mph zone. Agents also saw a passenger seated in the van’s rear repeatedly look out the rear window, “apparently monitoring the law enforcement vehicle behind it.”

Ms. Lewandowicz told agents she had no documents authorizing her to be in the United States, but had crossed into the country from Canada on July 7.

Documents do not indicate where she entered the country. Immigration records showed that she had been ordered removed, and removed, from the country Jan. 25 and had not received permission from the Department of Homeland Security to reapply for admission into the country.

According to court documents, she entered the country to find employment so she could send money back to her family in Poland. She is being held in U.S. marshals’ custody at the Clinton County Jail, Plattsburgh, pending her deportation.
